After living in Philadelphia for a few years now, I’ve realized that alleyways are an often overlooked and underrated component to the city’s design. This isn’t limited just to Philadelphia, but wanting to create my own content, I narrowed this book down to involve only Philadelphia alleys from all corners of the city.
I travelled the city taking photos of alleys, noting the differences between them. I conducted research into the history and origin of alleys as well as where they’re headed in the future. Alleys are inherently hidden, thus inspiring the Ben-Day dot pattern over my photographs. But, to uncover the alleys, I connected my book to AR technology so that when held over the photographs, the user could see the clear image of the alley that I had taken.
I created an icon system to show the user what photos reacted to the AR and carried this icon system throughout the book, also combining it with Ben-Day dots to create the end page paper pattern.
